Urban Potluck

The Urban Potluck (Malón Urbano) is a participatory tactic where neighbors are invited to share a big table to discuss, share and build community.

1. BROTHERHOOD OF THE STREETS, SANTIAGO

We implemented two urban participation tactics in Bellavista, inviting neighbors to share a large common table and discuss ideas for improving their neighborhoods. The only participation requirement to participate was the to bring something to share. Along with gathering valuable input for the declaration of a “Heritage Zone’, the Urban Potluck sought to strengthen the Bellavista’s communities’ social capital.

2. NEIGHBORHOOD POTLUCKS, VALPARAISO

Two neighborhood gatherings were organized on Valparaiso’s hills with the aim of strengthening existing social capital by inviting neighbors to share a common table and discuss ideas for improving their neighborhoods. They addressed the problem of waste and recycling and they collaborated in the construction of various recycled objects. Grass-roots organizations, neighborhood associations, and strategic partners participated in both events. The event was also used as an opportunity to teach and clarify doubts about recycling.

3. YUNGAY ON THE STREET, SANTIAGO

Yungay on the Street was a citizen’s urbanism operation meant to connect, inform, and involve citizens and residents of Yungay around the “SEREMI Neighborhood Recovery Program” objectives. It prompted a diagnostic exercise with the residents that collected their perceptions and expectations about the neighborhood using different methodologies. The project was an opportunity to promote meetings amongst neighbors, strengthen neighbourhood organizations, and contribute to the use and appropriation of public space.

4. CREO POTLUCKS, ANTOFAGASTA

“Malones Urbanos” (Urban Potlucks) were the first participatory citizen activity during the “CREO Antofagasta” to be realized at a territorial scale in the city. The plan seeks to create a better quality of life in Antofagasta by establishing opportunities for participation and dialogue between neighbors and by helping raising ideas from the citizens for the city.

Four Potlucks took place in different zones of the city.
