Ciudad Emergente is an interdisciplinary team hailing from fields such as architecture, urbanism, sociology, design, engineering and economics. This team works in strategic alliance with institutions, organizations and local communities, managing collaboration projects and, in so doing,  transforms itself into a catalyst for ideas.


DIRECTORS

 Javier Vergara Petrescu
MSc City Design & Social Sciences, London School of Economics
Architect Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile

Javier is a Co-founder and the CEO of Ciudad Emergente a Lab of Tactics and Tools for Citizen Urbanism. He specializes in combining social innovation projects, entrepreneurship, citizen participation and technologies to improve the quality of life in cities. He has worked on several urban development projects in Chile, Europe and the United States. Javier is also a co-founder of Plataforma UrbanaPlataforma Arquitectura, and  CitiSent. In 2006 he was voted one of the 100 Young Leaders of Chile by the publication El Sabado and the Center for Strategic Leadership of Universidad de Adolfo Ibañez. He is currently a professor of Tactical Urbanism at the Universidad Diego Portales (UDP), a professor of Urban Start-Ups at Universidad del Desarrollo (UDD), and a professor of the Masters in Urban Design (MPUR) at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. He has presented papers on Tactical Urbanism at the Universidad Autónoma de MéxicoColumbia University, and the Latin GSD of Harvard University. Marisol García 
MSc Urban Design in Development, University College London

Marisol is a co-founder and director of Ciudad Emergente. She is also a co-founder of UrbanKIT, a crowd-funding platform incubated in StartUp Chile, and a co-founder of the Foundation for Housing Management (Fundación Gestión Vivienda) known today as “Social Urbanism”, a foundation that develops housing, neighborhood and city projects through its own model of people-centric social urbanism. She worked for the Building and Social Housing Foundation (BSHF) in England, on building international networks and disseminating knowledge about innovative and good practices relating to community, housing and urban development worldwide. She is currently a professor of the Masters in Urban Design at the Pontíficia Universidad Católica de Chile, where she teaches the classes “Emerging Urbanism” and “Laboratory on Urban Design”.

Bárbara Barreda
Master in Architecture, Emergent Technologies and Design, Architectural Association, London
Architect, Universidad del Desarrollo

Barbara is a director of Ciudad Emergente. She specializes in design based on innovative and complex geometries, using unconventional and sustainable construction materials.  She has collaborated with architecture offices in Santiago and London on the design and construction of projects in Chile, Europe, and Asia. She currently works independently on various design projects and is a professor at the Universidad del Desarollo, teaching classes on materiality, composition, and technologies applied to architectural design.

Tomás Cortese  
MSc City Design & Social Sciences, London School of Economics
Master in Architecture, Architect Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile

Tomas is a co-founder and director of Ciudad Emergente. He is specialized in methodologies of design, prototyping and management of social innovation initiatives, with special emphasis on urban projects. Thomas is also the leader of the Social Innovation Challenge, part of Arauco’s innovation program. In addition Thomas is a founding partner of Green Footprints SpA, a social company dedicated to the management of sustainable agricultural-product consumption within communities, and of Crafts House (Casa de Oficios), a space for workshops and courses on handicraft and manual traditions. Within his architectural experience his work with the ELEMENTAL Do TankARUP Urban Design, and Gustafson Porter Landscape Architects in London particularly stand out. In 2004 he also participated in Chile’s exhibit at the Venice Biennale.

AWAlejandra Wood
Historian, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile

Alejandra is a director of Ciudad Emergente. She works in cultural administration and, since 2010, has been executive director of the Centro Gabriela Mistral, GAM. Before heading the GAM, she managed Scotiabank’s Corporate Affairs Division and CSR. Prior to this she managed BHP Billiton’s external affairs for over a decade. She has been included on El Mercurio’s list of 100 Women Leaders in Chile twice. As director of GAM she was praised for her management of the 2010 annual accounts by the journal Qué PasaLa Segunda newspaper, and the Paula journal. In 2012 she received the Energía Mujer prize for GAM’s work with the community. She is advisor to Comunidad Mujer and member of the Network for the Center for Public Space Studies (Red del Centro de Estudios Espacio Público).

Esteban is a director of Ciudad Emergente. He works as a professor at the Public Policies Institute of the Universidad Diego Portales and a research associate at Robert N. Butler Columbia Aging Center of Columbia University. He has also worked as a professor of Sociology at the Universidad Católica de Chile and a consultant for the United NationsHarvard University, the Center for Retirement Research and the Government of Chile. His research aims at identifying and understanding the social factors experienced during a lifetime that influence the health and happiness of seniors, as well as evaluating public policies and interventions that contribute to improving their wellbeing and society’s as a whole. He has authored more that 30 articles, policy papers, books, and chapters of books for which he has received prizes from the American Sociological Association, the American Public Health Association, the Gerontological Society of America and the Retirement Research Foundation.

Sebastián Bowen

Sebastian is a Director of Ciudad Emergente. Between 2005 and 2009 he worked as Social Director of TECHO (A Roof for Chile). He was the general coordinator for Eduardo Frei Ruiz Tagle’s presidential campaign. Subsequently he worked in Haiti, strengthening the management of primary schools for the educational foundation Foi et Joie Haití, in association with the and the foundation América Solidaria and the Compañia de Jesús.

JP Pinochet Juan Pedro Pinochet
Public Administrator, Universidad de Chile

Juan Pedro is a director of Ciudad Emergente. He’s the founding partner and general manager of Gestión Social, a consulting firm in social responsibility that advises businesses in every pertaining to sustainable development. He was the executive director of TECHO – A Roof for Chile  a TECHO – A Roof for my Country for twelve years. Under his management, the initiative became the leading foundation for young people, bringing together more than 400,000 volunteers from 19 Latin-American countries. He also has vast experience in the corporate world from his time as general manager of Parmalat Chile and his work in the banking sector.

He was a researcher at the Networks and Communities Laboratory at the Autónoma University of Barcelona and a visiting researcher at the University of Belgrade. He was a researcher at Flacso and co-director of Ekhos.

He teaches at the Pontificia Católica University of Chile and the Adolfo Ibáñez University. He also directs the Controversies Management group. He is a member of Tironi Asociados.


GiovanaGiovana Franceschetto Fernandes
Architect and Urbanist, Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul – Brazil.

Giovana is the Director of Emerging City. She works as a professor at the Desarrollo University, for the Architecture and Art faculty and as an independent architect and curator. She was executive director and co-curator of the XV Biennale di Architettura di Venezia with Alejandro Aravena | ELEMENTARY. She was curator and director of the South Front seminar – held by the Universidad del Desarrollo – where exponents of contemporary national architecture, such as Alejandro Aravena, participated. ELEMENTAL, Cecilia Puga, David Basulto, Elton_Léniz, Felipe Vera, Talca Group, José Uribe, Juan Román, Pezo Von Ellirchausen, Teresa Moller.

She was in charge of the development and implementation of the website ArchDailyBrasil, later becoming its chief editor.

She has collaborated in architectural projects and competitions in association with architects Alejandro Aravena | ELEMENTAL, Blanco & Andrade architects, Charles Murray, Elton_Leniz, millimeterMETRO, Victor Oddo.Asociados.

Coordinator of Urban Innovation in Emerging City

Davor is Coordinator of Urban Innovation in Emerging City, where he has led pilot initiatives of social cohesion, urban resilience and smart cities, along with coordinating processes of knowledge transfer in urban innovation between Europe and Latin America. Davor coordinated the pilot of Shared Streets corresponding to a pioneering initiative in Chile that seeks to experience a change of habit in the use of the street to combat climate change. He has coordinated the implementation of the Alameda Caminable Experiment of the Resilience Strategy of the Metropolitan Region of Santiago, and in 2017 he led the national initiative the Great Malon, an urban tactic that brought together 12 thousand Chileans in 9 regions of the country. around a large table to build trust and community. Between 2012 and 2015 he served as Director of Habitability and Project Manager in Fundación Junto al Barrio, where he led important urban interventions in Santiago, Valparaíso and Coquimbo, exhibited in the symposium “Latin American Incrementalism: from PREVI to Present”, in the Museum of New York Modern Art -MoMA, has also worked as an Urban Planning Advisor for the Municipality of Huara, promoting heritage conservation processes and the Country Service Program of the Poverty Overcoming Foundation leading urban initiatives in rural towns and technically supporting the rehabilitation of villages of indigenous communities in the altiplanic zone of the Tarapacá region in contexts of social vulnerability.

Kurt is the Coordinator of the Urban Tactics Laboratory in Emerging City, leading urban innovation projects on issues of sustainable mobility, citizen participation and generation of indicators to evaluate impacts on the planning of cities centered on people. He has developed and managed different urban tactics such as the Urban Malones, the Okuplazas, the Shared Streets project and the Alameda Caminable experiment, as well as the consultancy for the Concón Innovation Park. In 2017 he coordinated the metropolitan area of ​​the initiative the Great Malon, an urban tactic that brought together in one day 12 thousand Chileans in 9 regions of the country around a large table to build trust and community. He has more than 10 years of experience in city planning, entrepreneurship, innovation, community activation and technologies, both from the Urban Development Division of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Planning of Chile, and in his role as a teacher in the Faculty of Urbanism and Landscape of the Central University of Chile. He has made several presentations of Emerging City, highlighting the Habita III World Conference on Housing and Sustainable Development in Quito, Ecuador, participating with Greenpeace Mexico and Engajamundo of Brazil in the talk “People power in cities: Finding ways to strengthen urban movements “. Kurt is also a consultant and urban manager in the WEG consultancy and is incubating the project Beyond your Plate, a foundation to connect Chileans and migrants through food.

PSPablo Soriano

Master’s Degree in Territorial Development, Higher Technical School of Architecture of the U. Politècnica de Catalunya (ETSA)

Pablo is in charge of research and development (R & D) of Emerging City. his line of work has been heritage neighborhoods, tourism and the urban landscape. He has an important career in the public and private sector as a Country Service or other programs of the Foundation for Overcoming Poverty, various studies in Development Plans Territorial linked to tourism in Yerba Loca, the Ruta de los Volcanes, Patagonia de Chile, Barrio Yungay, La Chimba and in Europe in the Landscape Letters of Catalonia. In the academic area, he is a professor of landscape architecture, has received a scholarship of academic excellence in undergraduate, master’s and doctorate, has publications and books related to heritage tourism and landscape from a social perspective. He likes gazpacho and has a good heart.

Sarah is a Publicist, with a double mention in Advertising and Creative Services in Visual Communications from Edith Cowan University, Perth, Australia. I also study Creative Processes at the AdSchool school in Brisbane, Australia. She has worked as a designer in several projects in Australia, France and Chile. Since July 2017, she joined the team of Waves as Community Manager and Designer where she also supports the communication strategies of Emerging City. Sarah always looks for new challenges where she can use her skills and develop new ones. He likes to travel, cook and learn new languages.

Through the academy and from his role in the DTPM he has focused his research on issues of intermodality and sustainable transport.

Verónica is the Citizen Culture Coordinator of Ciudad Emergente. She is also Coordinator of the studies and projects area of Fundación para la Confianza. He has held functions in the Fauna Australis Laboratory, in the Public Policy Center and in the GAMA UC Environment Advisory Group. With experience in legislative analysis and follow-up to parliamentary work in matters of environmental relevance, and in the development of initiatives for the promotion of citizen involvement in environmental initiatives. He has participated in applied research projects in conservation matters, strengthening social capital, and protecting the rights of children. His areas of study are human rights, sustainable development, environmental governance, environmental justice and citizen participation.


IsmailIsmail Salomon
Politologist Rafael Landivar University of Guatemala

Ismail is in charge of the social area in Guatemala of the Ciudad Compartidas project implemented by Ciudad Emergente. He is co-founder and currently vice president of the direct board of the International Center for Development Management (NGO), CIDES is a transformation network for social change that focuses on social research to influence the implementation of new forms of governance. He is the coordinator of the governance and governance area in Advocacy for Business and Human Rights (ABHR). He is also an official UN trainer on the 2030 agenda of the Sustainable Development Goals.

Patricio is a consultant to Ciudad Emergente. The greater part of his carrier has been dedicated to communication media. He is the founder and director of The Clinic and leader of the radio program Desde Zero of Radio Zero.  He is the author of the novels “Ferrantes”, “Los nenes”, and “La calle me distrajo.” He is also a columnist for Gatopardo (Mexico), Soho (Columbia), Piauí (Brasil) and El País (España).

Aurash is a consultant to Ciudad Emergente. As a New York City resident since 2009, he has supported regional planning processes in Brooklyn, Manhattan, Westchester County, Rockland County, and Long Island, as well as in other American cities including Pittsburg, Denver, New Orleans, and Austin. He has taught classes in the New School, Queens College, and in the Strelka Institute for Architecture, Media, and Design in Moscow, Russia. He co-founded DoTank.org – an interdisciplinary action group whose work was presented at the Venice Architecture Biennale in 2010, the XVIII Architecture Biennale, Chile, and other exhibits.

Krista is a co-founder and consultant to Ciudad Emergente. She has five years of experience developing renewable energy strategies for 3Degrees in San Francisco. She has lead large-scale strategies on marketing, the web, and project management and has worked with clients who possess the wealth to communicate their commitment to sustainability.

Krista has extensive experience and networks in businesses relating to the environment, community and urban development. She is a co-founder of the crowd funding venture UrbanKIT and has lead various projects on web-development, coordinating teams of designers and developers.
